So last night I was on the DVSA website, refreshing the page literally every two minutes and for the life of me could not see any earlier tests. As I was doing that, I get 5 notifications through saying there were a bunch of cancellations. Great, quick refresh. Nothing. Well this doesnt make sense, I had been refreshing the page for at least 15 minutes before I get these notifications and refreshed when I got them, but nothing. Fake notifications to justify its £12.99 cost.

Brilliant! Booked a test on the gov website for end of October, which was over 5 months away. Downloaded Testi and kept trying for a cancellation. Was too late clicking the notifications and kept getting beaten to the slots, or didn't bother clicking as they were still too far away (October) or same day so not enough notice. After 9 days of playing 'fastest finger first', I got one for June, just 11 days away :)

This actually works. Not sure how the devs managed to do it but this actually does work very well. I would say don't rely on the in-app browser to actually book the tests. It's a waste of time. Once you see the notification for cancellation, go to the DVSA website on your own browser and try to grab the slots. When a cancellation shows up in the app notification, that usually means a bunch of other cancellations are springing up around it, try to target those.
