Long Exhale is a paced breathing app with one job: getting you from lying awake to asleep.
Put the phone face down and close your eyes. A low tone rises as you breathe in and falls as you breathe out, so this breathing guide works with the screen dark and your eyes shut. Nothing to watch, nothing to read.
WHEN THIS IS FOR
Lying awake with the day still running.
Waking at three in the morning and not getting back down.
Tired, but not sleepy.
A mind that will not stop going over things.
Sharing a bed and not wanting to keep anyone awake.
HOW THE BREATHING WORKS
The breath pacer starts near your natural rhythm, around ten breaths a minute, and slows from there. By the time you have settled it is closer to five and a half — the resonance rate, sometimes called coherent breathing — with a long, unhurried exhale.
Slow breathing with an extended out-breath is the part that settles the nervous system. The ramp is gradual enough that you are unlikely to notice it happening. You are not asked to count, hold a pattern, or remember a technique.
THEN IT GETS OUT OF THE WAY
Most sleep apps keep going until you turn them off. This one fades: the guide grows quieter and the cues spread further apart until there is nothing. No chime, no "session complete". On a good night you drift off before it finishes and never hear it end.
WHAT IT DOESN'T DO
No streaks. No reminder that you missed last night. No score. Sleep gets worse when you are being graded on it, so nothing here counts your failures.
It is also not a relaxation soundtrack, a calm playlist or a meditation course. There is one tone that follows your breath, and it is the whole app. If what you want is music to relax to, this is the wrong thing and there are better ones.
IF YOU SHARE A BED
Turn on taps and the pace arrives as a gentle haptic pulse instead of a sound. Nothing lights up, nothing makes a noise, and the person next to you sleeps through it.
IF YOU WAKE IN THE NIGHT
One tap starts a shorter, quieter session made for a restless 3am. No setup, no menus, nothing bright.
A WIND-DOWN NUDGE
One optional bedtime reminder. Not a session, just a cue that it is time to put the day down and unwind. It never nags and never mentions a streak.
IN THE MORNING
One question: did you fall asleep before it ended? That is the only thing this sleep app ever asks you, and skipping it is fine.
PRIVATE BY DEFAULT
Your sleep stays on your device. No account, no sign-in, nothing about your nights uploaded — not your answers, not your sessions, not anything. The only thing that ever leaves is a purchase, handled by our payment processor.
FREE, WITH AN OPTIONAL EXTRA
The full guided session is free, along with the morning question and the night list. One optional payment unlocks the measured part: whether you are getting to sleep before the guide ends more often, which comes from your morning answers; and which breath you typically fall asleep on, which needs the phone on the bed rather than a nightstand, close enough to feel you settle.
Long Exhale is not a medical device and is not a treatment for a diagnosed sleep disorder. If you are pregnant, or have a respiratory or cardiac condition, check with a doctor before taking up paced breathing.
A slow breath pacer that fades out as you fall asleep. No streaks, no scores.
