About this app

Mushpits stands out with its clear focus on mycology. With functions specifically tailored to mushrooms, Mushpits appeals to mushroom pickers, mycologists, researchers and nature lovers.

Focus on mycology

Mushpits supports proven functions such as simple mapping of mushroom finds, transparent quality assurance measures and organization in community projects. However, the platform goes even further: specific attributes such as the consideration of protection status, host plants, edibility and more enable in-depth analysis and application.

A key unique selling point of Mushpits is the integrated weather data, which is not only statistically processed and displayed on a fund-specific basis, but is also used in aggregated form as a basis for determining probabilities for expected mushroom occurrences. The offer is supplemented by specialized map layers that show, for example, nature reserves, the acidity of the soil or the existing tree population - a real added value for mushroom enthusiasts!

Support in the forest and beyond

Mushpits was developed in cooperation with the DGfM to support mushroom enthusiasts, especially offline in the forest. This makes it easy and time-efficient to record finds in the field, even without an internet connection. In addition, the taxonomy database synchronized on the device can be used at any time as a reference work or to support identification.

Other useful applications are also served online. Mushpits helps to answer questions such as:

• Which mushrooms can I find in my area today - and with what probability?
• What has the weather been like over the last few days and how does this affect the number of mushrooms?
• Where and when can I find a certain type of mushroom in my area or worldwide?
• When and under what environmental conditions should I revisit the places where I found them?
• Who has currently discovered which mushroom species in other areas (countries, administrative borders, ...)?

The mushroom finds from the database are also displayed in prepared phenology diagrams and on various maps. Several display variants are used for the data aggregation: a dynamic local clustering takes place for the own findings and a honeycomb form was chosen for the overview maps, which specifically covers every point of the earth's surface with millimeter precision and projection fidelity at the zoom level.

Focus on the community

With the support of common interaction mechanisms of well-known social media platforms such as sharing, following, likes and hashtags, the typical community character forms another core element of Mushpits. The platform focuses on collaboration and exchange in order to strengthen enthusiasm for mycology.

Whether it's joint excursions in the form of community tours, confirming or disputing identified mushroom species by actively placing vetoes on the community's findings or comparing finding conditions - Mushpits brings mushroom lovers together and documents their own activities at the same time.

Contribution to nature conservation

Mushpits not only provides support for mushroom enthusiasts, but also actively contributes to the protection of the environment. The data collected provides valuable information on environmentally relevant factors such as soil conditions, tree population or weather conditions. This data is passed on to relevant institutions (including the DGfM, of course) in order to support research in the field of mycology and ecology. By analyzing the data, targeted measures can be derived, for example, to protect endangered species and promote nature conservation. Mushpits thus makes it possible to combine individual commitment with a positive impact on our environment.
