Imagine a campfire. A summer night. Someone older and wiser passes you a
controller and says: "Let me tell you about this one."
That is The Pixel Campfire.
Twenty-five games. Twenty-five stories. A narrator sits you down — scout-camp
style, under the stars — and tells you about each game before you play it.
Not just "press Start." The STORY. Who made it. Why it mattered. What the
world looked like the year it came out. What it felt like to drop a quarter
into the slot and hear the attract screen for the first time.
And then — you play it. The way your grandparents played. The way your
parents played. The way you played, if you're a fellow mammoth like us.
WHAT'S INSIDE — 25 GAMES, 1 DOS-ERA SHELL
We styled the launcher like Norton Commander — the file manager an entire
generation lived inside before Windows existed. Pick a game, double-tap,
and the campfire narrator takes over.
Twenty-five games. We won't spoil them all — half the fun is
discovering what's inside. But here's a taste of what the campfire
has in store:
...smash through walls of bricks with a ball and a paddle while
power-ups rain from above.
...command a tank through city streets, defending your bunker
against waves of enemies — the game that ate entire Soviet winters.
...guide a tiny creature across five lanes of traffic and a river
full of logs. One wrong jump — start over. You'll swear. You'll
love it.
...land a lunar module on five different planets with nothing but
thrust and prayer. Real Apollo engineers trained on something
like this.
...play the worst-selling video game cartridge in history. Yes, we
rebuilt it. Yes, it's terrible. Sit by the fire — the story of
WHY it matters is worth every frustrating second.
...navigate a maze, eat dots, dodge ghosts — the game a man designed
because he wanted his girlfriend to enjoy arcades.
...type commands into a text adventure so old it predates screens.
The great-grandfather of every RPG you've ever played is waiting
inside.
...and much, much more.
Twenty-five games. Twenty-five campfire stories. One pocket museum.
THE CAMPFIRE PROMISE
Every game comes with a story. Not a manual — a STORY. Told the way
someone who loves games tells them: with history, with humor, with the
kind of detail that makes you say "wait, THAT's why they made it that way?"
Some stories are about genius. Some are about failure. One is about
a woman who designed a masterpiece in 1982 and was nearly forgotten.
One is about the worst game ever made and why you should play it anyway.
All of them are about the world that made these games — and the games
that made our world.

what saved it. (Answer: a small Japanese company called Nintendo.
We tell that story too — by the fire.)
