You start with one cell in the corner of a grid. So do up to three rivals. Every turn you spend moves to claim ground — empty ground, or ground somebody else is holding — and the board decides the rest.
MOVES COME OUT OF THE LAND
Territory pays for the moves you make, at a rate that falls off as you grow, and whoever is furthest behind is handed extra. Being squeezed into a corner is a position to fight out of, not a slow loss.
THE GROUND IS PRICED
Taking a cell off a rival costs more the deeper into their territory it sits, so a front line is expensive to break and a border is worth holding. Fortify ground of your own and it costs them one move more.
WHAT YOU CANNOT SEE
You see your own territory and the ring of cells around it. The rest is fog until you reach it — a watchtower sees three cells in every direction, and radar widens your view for good.
FIVE BOARDS, AND WHAT IS BURIED IN THEM
Organic wilds, a clear open grid, scattered rocks, fordable rivers, or a walled citadel with the richest ground inside. Quarries sit in plain sight and pay a move a turn, more the longer you hold them. Bonus clusters pay every turn while you hold all four cells, and hand over a shield, a bridge, radar or a refund. Mines are buried at random and nothing marks them; the blast returns every cell within three to nobody.
