WordSpire is a deckbuilding roguelike where the combat system is a language.
You climb an endless tower. Each floor is a card battle. When you play a card, the
game asks you a word — and how well you answer decides how hard the card lands.
Spell it exactly and the strike deals full damage. Get half the letters in the right
places and it lands at half strength. Type nothing and the card is spent for nothing.
The words are not attached to the cards. A card is an ability — 6 damage, 8 shield,
draw two. Which word you are asked is decided by a spaced-repetition scheduler that
tracks every word you have met and knows when you are about to forget it. You never
build a word list, never grind flashcards, and never review anything twice on the
same day by accident. You just climb, and the review happens inside the fight.
WHAT YOU GET
• Six courses: English to German, Spanish or French — and each of them in reverse
• About 5,000 words per language, every one taught inside a real example sentence
with its translation
• An SM-2 spaced-repetition engine driving every question in the game
• Forty ability cards, and a deck of 8 to 20 that you compose before each climb
• Relics that bend the rules: more time on the clock, a revealed letter, a softer
landing when you get one wrong
• Topic packs — travel, food, business, school — and five difficulty bands, from the
400 most common words to the rare and the awkward
• Branching floors, elites, shops, campfires and a boss at the top of every section
HOW THE ANSWERING WORKS
Every prompt is typed. There is no multiple choice anywhere in the game, because
picking a word out of four is a different and much easier skill than writing it.
As you type, each letter tells you where you stand: gold for a letter in the right
place, amber for a letter that belongs in the word but not there, red for one that
does not belong at all. You learn the spelling while you are still getting it wrong,
which is the only moment in a review where teaching is free.
Accents are optional. Type "madchen" and Mädchen is accepted in full.
Climb an endless tower. Every card you play asks you a word.
