honestly, better than Duolingo. you learn Kanji as you learn words, so you get used to reading it. not to mention, there are games you can play to reinforce your vocabulary that are actually fun (unlike most edutainment)! i recommend at the very least giving it a try if you want to learn Japanese, and you can set your current skill level right from the start.

So far, this has been much better than Duolingo, which I used a couple years back. instead of throwing random exercises and words at you, renshuu actually teaches you the Japanese alphabet first. The memorization is a little rushed in my opinion (new characters to memorize every day) but I've gained a solid understanding of Hiragana, soon to move into Katakana. I would definitely recommend this app for anybody attempting to learn Japanese.

If your goal is to learn Japanese alone, this is a far better option than Duolingo. The app is run by a very small team, but there is far more community engagement, and the flashcards leave a much larger inpression than Duo's monotony and repetition. I have been using the app for about a week and I already can remember the hiragana alphabet better than my 100+ days of Duolingo. The UI is a work in progress but trust me, the experience is friendlier and seems more attuned to my needs.
