About this app

OtterPlot is a gentle, genre-aware writing prompt generator for microfiction, short stories, poetry, or your next great novel. Pick your ingredients, stir the pot, and get a unique, coherent story prompt every time.

Whether you're warming up before a writing session, battling writer's block, or just looking for a spark of inspiration, OtterPlot gives you prompts that actually make sense together.

WHAT MAKES OTTERPLOT DIFFERENT

Genre-aware generation means prompts favour ingredients that fit your chosen genre while still surprising you with unexpected but plausible combinations. A compatibility engine works behind the scenes so that characters, creatures, objects and settings respect each other's logic. Anatomical traits match body types, conditions match materials, and moods set tone without over-explaining.

EIGHT GENRES, ENDLESS SUB-GENRES

Choose from fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, romance, horror, contemporary, historical fiction, and D&D. Pick one genre or mix two together to unlock named sub-genres: Fantasy + Romance becomes Romantasy. Dystopian + Sci-fi becomes Cyberpunk. Horror + Romance becomes Dark Romance. Fantasy + Sci-fi becomes Science Fantasy. There are dozens of combinations to explore, or hit "Surprise me" and let OtterPlot choose for you.
With over 2,600 ingredients across seven categories, OtterPlot can generate trillions of unique prompt combinations. You (should!) never see the same one twice.

DESIGNED FOR WRITERS

OtterPlot is built by writers, for writers. The interface stays out of your way so you can focus on what matters: the next story. Copy your prompt with a tap and take it to whatever writing tool you prefer.
