Reversi Lab is fifteen Othello variants in one board game. Each one changes a single rule, and the whole game changes with it.
Start with Classic. Then take the same 8 x 8 board and connect five in a row instead of counting discs. Or win by holding the fewest. Or seal the four corners. Or put a king on the edge and try to flip it. The moves you already know still work. What they are worth is what changed.
HOW IT PLAYS
Place a disc so it brackets your opponent's discs in a straight line, and every disc between them flips to your colour. If you cannot move, your turn passes. That much never changes.
What changes is the goal, the pieces, the board, or the condition that ends the game. One thing at a time, so you always know exactly which rule you are playing against.
THE FIFTEEN EXPERIMENTS
GOALS
- Classic. The original balance of power.
- Five. Flip the board, connect five.
- Anti. Keep fewer discs to win.
PIECES
- Anchor Five. One disc that will never turn.
- Anchor Classic. Classic scoring, one permanent disc.
- Knight Classic. A knight forbids the squares it attacks.
- Royal Othello. Capture the king to win.
BOARDS
- Cut Corners. Four sealed corners reshape the board.
- Mini 6 x 6. A faster game on a compact board.
- Symmetric Start. A new balanced opening every game.
- Cross Cut. Four central barriers split the board.
CONDITIONS
- Edge Five. Connect five along one edge.
- Corner Race. Claim three corners to win.
- Domination. Board regions are worth different amounts.
- Move Count. The game ends after forty placements.
PLAYING
Play the computer on Easy or Normal, or hand the phone over for a two-player game on the same device. Undo a turn when you misread the board. Every variant keeps its own record of games played, wins, losses and draws, so you can see which rules you actually understand.
Each variant opens with a short animated explanation of the one rule that makes it different. No mode needs a manual.
