About this app

Tape Deck is a fast, private note-taking app dressed up like a 1980s cassette deck. Each note is a real-looking cassette tape: dark plastic shell, two spools, an A-side sticker label with a hand-marker title, a colored mode pill, a brand strip across the bottom. The home screen is a vertical rack of tapes. To record a new one, you hit the big round red REC button in the top-left corner. No accounts. No cloud. Everything stays on your device.

FIVE NOTE MODES

PROSE free-form text. A thought, a paragraph, a passage.
CHECK a checklist. Tap an item to tick it off.
LIST a bullet list. One item per line.
QUOTE a pull quote with an accent color and a kicker line.
CODE a code or command snippet, set in a mono font.

Each mode has its own tape colour. PROSE is red tape. CHECK is green. LIST is amber. QUOTE is white. CODE is dim. The mode pill on every cassette sticker tells you what is on the tape at a glance.

THE RACK

The home screen is a single column of horizontal cassettes. Each cassette is the full width of the screen, with a cream sticker on top showing the mode pill, date, and title in a bold marker font, and a brand strip at the bottom that reads SIDE A C-90 with the tag stamped beside it. A small red REC dot in the top-right corner of the sticker means the note is pinned.

THE REC BUTTON

The primary action is the big round red REC button in the top-left of the header. Tap it and a new blank tape pops up ready to record. The button glows like a real recording LED. No floating button at the bottom -- the action lives where the rest of the deck controls would on a real machine.

LED COUNTER

A three-digit amber LED counter sits in the top-right corner showing your current streak in days. Below the rack, a thin transport strip runs across the bottom with rewind, play, pause, stop, and fast-forward symbols -- just like a real deck.

THE EDITOR

Tap a cassette and the tape flips to an editor. You pick a mode at the top, type or paste in the middle, and add a tag at the bottom. Checklist mode parses one item per line and turns each into a tickbox. Code mode switches the font to monospace. Quote mode adds an accent stripe. Save, archive, pin, or delete from a small row of actions at the top.

TAGS

A built-in tag browser shows every tag you have ever used, with a count next to each. Tap a tag to see only the tapes that carry it. Tags are plain ASCII text, no special characters, just whatever feels right.

SETTINGS

Dark theme (dark wood deck look) or light theme (brushed cream face). Default font size for the editor, default mode for new tapes, sort order (newest first or oldest first), and a toggle to show or hide stopped tapes in the main rack.

PRIVACY

Tape Deck keeps every tape on your device. There is no sign-in, no cloud sync, no analytics, no ad SDK. The note store is encrypted at rest with a key that lives in the Android Keystore. If you uninstall the app, the tapes go with it.

WHY A CASSETTE DECK

Because a cassette is a real thing you can hold. You put a tape in, you press a button, you hear it back. Tape Deck keeps that feeling. Hit REC, record a thing, eject. Come back tomorrow and the tape is still on the rack, ready to play.
