Two red sevens sit on a square of linen. Join them with a line of floss exactly seven cells long, crossing nothing on the way, and the first lines of a picture appear. Thread Art is a number-clue picture puzzle where every matching pair of numbers marks the two ends of one thread.
How to play
1. Find the twin. Every number is one end of a thread, and its twin is the other number with the same value and the same floss color.
2. Count the stitches. A thread covers exactly that many cells, both ends included. A 1 is a single stitch, so just tap it.
3. Thread up, down, left or right. Threads never cross, never share a cell and never run over another number.
4. Begin with numbers that have only one route, such as short ones near the edge or hemmed in by others.
5. Join every number and the lines turn into cross-stitches, ready to frame in your Sampler.
Each pattern has exactly one answer, and you can always reason it out from the numbers on the cloth.
48 patterns fill four hoops of twelve. First Stitches holds 10×10 hearts, petals and the studio cat, Garden Floss stitches blooms, bugs and a frog on 12×12 cloth, Kampung Sampler brings ketupat, wau kites and teh tarik on 14×14, and Heirloom finishes with grand 15×15 pieces: a peacock, koi and a rafflesia. Finish six patterns in a hoop to open the next.
Each morning a four-fold medallion is drawn for the Daily, 10×10 on weekdays and 12×12 at weekends. Three knots reward each pattern: Steady for no snapped thread, Unaided for no peeks at the pattern book and Swift for beating par. Skeins from every finish buy six fabrics, from Natural Linen to Midnight Aida, and five hoops in beech, bamboo, cherry, walnut and brass. The 17 awards include Long Thread, for joining a 9 in one smooth pull.

The linen is in the hoop and the madder red is threaded. Where will your first stitch go?
