About this app

Just Steps shows the step count your phone already records - and nothing more.

Most step counters want an account, a subscription, a social feed, and constant notifications. Just Steps has a single, clean screen: today's step count, your daily goal, and the last seven days.

What you get

* Today's step count, updated every time you open the app
* A daily goal with a simple progress indicator
* Seven days of history with tap-to-view daily totals
* A streak showing consecutive days you reached your goal
* Estimated distance and energy, in kilometres or miles
* Automatic light and dark mode to match your system theme

Privacy, in plain terms

No accounts. No sign-in. No email address. No analytics. No advertising. No crash reporting. No third-party libraries that phone home.

Just Steps does not request the Android INTERNET permission. That's not a promise - it's a technical fact. Without that permission, the app cannot send data anywhere.

The app reads only your step count. It does not access your location, heart rate, sleep, contacts, or any other health data. It never writes to or deletes your Health Connect records. Access is read-only, and you can revoke it at any time through Health Connect.

The only information stored on your device is your daily goal, preferred distance unit, and whether estimated distance and energy are shown.

What it deliberately doesn't do

* No GPS or route maps
* No workout or exercise logging
* No calorie or food tracking
* No social features, leaderboards, or challenges
* No notifications, badges, or reminders
* No subscriptions, in-app purchases, or paywalls

How it works

Your phone already counts your steps and stores them in Health Connect, Android's central health data service. Just Steps simply reads that data.

Because it doesn't count steps itself or run continuously in the background, it uses virtually no extra battery and stays consistent with the step counts already recorded by your phone, watch, or other fitness apps.

Requirements

Health Connect is built into Android 14 and later. On Android 13 and earlier, it's available as a free download from Google Play. The first time you open Just Steps, you'll be asked to grant read access to your step count. Until then, the app has nothing to display.

Accuracy

Step counts are provided by your device's sensors and apps that write to Health Connect, so they are approximate. Distance and energy estimates are calculated from your step count using average values - they are estimates, not measurements.

Just Steps is not a medical device and should not be used for medical decisions.
