You own a circular saw. You've used it twice. It's been in your garage for three years.
Your neighbor probably has the same drill you do. Your dad bought a tile cutter for one bathroom remodel and hasn't touched it since. Someone on your street has a pressure washer that gets used twice a summer.
This is the problem FriendsWithTools is trying to fix.
It's a private app for sharing the tools you already own with people you actually know. Friends, family, neighbors, the people at your makerspace — not strangers, not a marketplace. Just a shared library among people who already trust each other.
How it works:
- Add your tools with a photo and a couple of details
- Invite the people you'd actually let into your garage
- When someone needs a hammer drill, they ask. You say yes (or no). Both of you have a record.
No rental fees. No service charges. No payments for borrowing, ever. The whole point is to make sharing easier between people who already share things.
What's in the app:
- A personal tool library with photos, condition notes, and where each thing is stored
- Private groups for your neighborhood, friend circle, family, or makerspace
- Borrow requests with built-in messaging so you don't have to dig through old texts
- Loan tracking so you actually remember who borrowed your good level
- Optional waivers when you want clear expectations before lending out something expensive
- A wishlist for stuff you wish someone in your circle owned
What it isn't:
- A marketplace: we won't show you random strangers nearby
- A rental platform: no money changes hands for borrowing
- A storefront
There's a small team behind this. If something's broken or missing, we want to hear about it.
