How Pie VAT Refunds work:

1. After you checkout in store, ask to do a refund via Pie Systems. Open the Pie VAT app and scan the QR code the cashier provides. Take a quick picture of the paper receipt. Submit!

2. Once you are at the airport, use the Pie VAT app to scan your boarding pass.

3. Enjoy your VAT refund - maybe buy some pie.

Ratings and reviews

Super convenient and easy to use. The only minor problem was that I only had an electronic (emailed, pdf) receipt. I could generate an image but the app required a photo be taken. So I needed to print the receipt in order to take a photo of it. Otherwise it was a very smooth and fast process.

I recently returned from Europe on a very early flight where manually presenting VAT forms at the airport wouldn't have been possible. The user experience is a bit clunky with the various image uploads, but overall provides me as a busy traveler with greatly needed flexibility once I'm back home. My hope is that more merchants adopt digital tools like VAT.

Very time-consuming to set up an account. subsequent purchases should go better, but this system is far less user-friendly than the old system. On this same trip, our other purchases went through global blue, we showed our items, ID, and receipts at the airport, and had the money in our account 2 days later. just saying.
