How Pie VAT Refunds work:

1. After you checkout in store, ask to do a refund via Pie Systems. Open the Pie VAT app and scan the QR code the cashier provides. Take a quick picture of the paper receipt. Submit!

2. Once you are at the airport, use the Pie VAT app to scan your boarding pass.

3. Enjoy your VAT refund - maybe buy some pie.

Ratings and reviews

Did everything it was supposed to, pretty easy to understand and get your refund. I would use it again no doubt. I took off one star just because when I was using this at the counter with the service person to get my refund, there was a manual step where he had to go through every single receipt and approve it on the app and that seemed a bit like it could be optimized. Without someone and you what they were doing, that part might have taken a lot longer.

All the 5-star reviews are either paid or are by idiots. This service takes a 3% cut, meaning you only get back 7% of the 10% tax. It takes quite a while to actually get the refund paid out, you lose a bit more again due to a dodgy conversion rate. There is literally no benefit to this service as a tourist over a store that handles tax free at the counter. If you find yourself needing to download this app, you're better off shopping elsewhere.

this is the only place we went to in our trip to Japan that made you download an app to get a tax refund. I give it an extra star because it does work. But who the hell wants another random app which we will likely never use again. It is stupid.
