HOW TO PLAY CHESS?
Chess is played between two players with 16 pieces each on an 8x8 board. White starts, and players take turns making one move each. The goal is to checkmate the opponent's king; that is, to put the king under threat and not leave it with any move to escape, intervene, or remove the threat.
PIECE MOVEMENTS
• King: Moves one square in any direction.
• Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction. • Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally and vertically. • Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally.
• Knight: Moves in an L shape (two squares straight, one square sideways) and can jump over pieces. • Pawn: Moves one square forward, can move two squares on its first move; captures a diagonal piece. A pawn that reaches the last row evolves into a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
SPECIAL MOVES
• Castling: If the king and rook have not moved before, there are no pieces between them, and the king is not under threat, the king moves two squares towards the rook, and the rook moves next to the king. • En passant: When an opponent's pawn moves two squares on its first move and comes next to your pawn, you can capture it en passant on the next move.
The player whose king is under threat must remove the threat; no move that puts one's own king under threat is allowed. If the player whose turn it is has no valid moves while their king is not under threat, it is a stalemate, and the game ends in a draw. A draw also occurs if the same position is repeated three times and neither side has any pieces left to checkmate.
