OpenBackup – Backup Monitor
Monitor your SuperDuper! backups from anywhere.
OpenBackup lets you check the status of SuperDuper! backups on your Mac directly from your Android device. Instead of remotely accessing your Mac, OpenBackup reads a small status file that is updated after every completed backup.
OpenBackup monitors backups. It does not create backups itself.
How OpenBackup works
OpenBackup consists of several components:
1. SuperDuper! creates the backup on your Mac.
2. OpenBackup Setup installs the BackupMonitor.sh status monitor.
3. After a backup, the monitor updates backup_status.json.
4. Your configured cloud provider or HTTPS server makes this status file available.
5. The OpenBackup Android app reads the file and displays the latest backup status.
The Android app requires the Mac setup and a supported connection. Installing only the Android app is not enough to monitor backups.
What you need
• A Mac running macOS
• SuperDuper! with at least one configured backup job
• OpenBackup Setup for macOS
• An Android device with the OpenBackup app
• Google Drive, Dropbox, or a supported HTTPS location
• An internet connection for status synchronization
OpenBackup Setup for macOS and the complete installation guide are available at:
https://openbackup.app
Mac installation
OpenBackup Setup installs the tested monitor script, creates the initial status file and prepares logging.
During installation, macOS requests administrator authorization to apply the script permissions required by SuperDuper!. OpenBackup does not see or store your administrator password.
OpenBackup Setup is not yet notarized by Apple. On first launch, macOS may require you to approve the app manually under System Settings → Privacy & Security. Full instructions are available on the OpenBackup website.
Demo data
OpenBackup Setup creates a status file containing clearly identified demo backups. This allows you to test the Android connection without first waiting for a complete SuperDuper! backup.
The demo information is replaced or updated when the monitor processes your real backup jobs.

Designed for reliability
OpenBackup is designed to do one thing well: show whether your backups are running as expected.
The app does not create backups, modify backup jobs or inspect your backup contents. It only reads the small status file generated by the monitor on your Mac.
Privacy
Your backup data remains under your control.
OpenBackup only retrieves backup_status.json from the cloud location or HTTPS server you configure. Personal documents, passwords and backup contents are not uploaded to OpenBackup.
