This works quite well. It is useful if you are in a wooded area and cannot see landmarks but I still prefer to use my 1:25,000 Explorer map and my Recta (or Suunto) baseplate compass. A BIG improvement would be to enable this to work on external storage. Internal storage is very much at a premium so any app that demands it must compete with others for that space.
I have a problem since the last update. After using the app (which works fine) then closing it when I've finished, the app is restarting in the background and turning on the GPS which in turn is draining the battery. I have to reboot the phone or block location permission to stop it. Annoying! Any chance you can investigate and fix. (Android V6.0)
For an official OS app offered to compliment OS paper maps, this really should report altitude relative to the Newlyn datum, i.e. mean sea level around the UK (like the maps). It doesn't. It reports relative to the WGS84 ellipsoid, which is approx 40m lower. Bit of an oversight by the developers.
Excellent for finding your grid reference and the live camera with Silva compass overlay is great, but I would not rely on the compass mode at all as it doesn't work. The issue that I've been having for quite a few versions of this app is that the compass reading is tied to the wrong device sensor. It uses the phone's sideways tilt angle when held upright in portrait mode instead of the compass sensor. Something that I have only encountered in this app, and not with other compass-only apps (tested with a few). This is fairly *major* if the app is advertised as having a built in compass mode and it should be looked at as soon as possible! The issue occurs on a Google Pixel 2 phone with Android Oreo 8.1. 3/5 because of this issue which has persisted for too long.
Basically it's inaccurate. Out by 40 m and 30 degrees. It's a novelty only but useless when you need a compass. Update: And some apps notify when a calibration is needed. This does not. Also another app i use is accurate regarding height ie agrees with my OS map. Why is it not possible to generate accurate data? Same phone same location different app? now 2 star rating as at least there was a response to my feedback. thank you.
More awful ordnance survey coding. Their maps are brilliant but whoever codes their apps and the management responsible need to find other careers, awful buggy rubbish.
