About this app

The UK Immigration: ID Check app lets you confirm your identity online when:
• applying for a visa
• updating your personal details on your UKVI account
• setting up access to your online immigration status (eVisa)


Before you start

You must follow the steps in the online application form, account update or eVisa form before using the app.

You will need to be in a well-lit area, so you can take a good quality photo of yourself.


If you are applying for a visa

If you use this app when you apply for a visa, you will not have to attend an appointment to confirm your identity.

You can use this app if you are:
• an EU, European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss citizen
• a British national (overseas) visa (BNO) applicant with a BNO or Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport
• a graduate visa applicant with a UK biometric residence permit (BRP)

You will need either:
• a passport that has a chip (also called a ‘biometric passport’)
• a biometric residence permit (BRP)

If you’re applying for a graduate visa and are not from the EU, European Economic Area (EEA) or a Swiss citizen, you must use your BRP.

If you use a BRP, it must not have expired more than 18 months ago.


If you are setting up access to your eVisa

You will need either a biometric residence permit (BRP) or a passport.

If you use a BRP, it must not have expired more than 18 months ago.


If you are updating the personal details on your UKVI account

You will need a passport or other identity document with your new details. Your document must have a biometric chip.


What happens next

The app only helps confirm your identity. You must still complete the rest of the visa application, account update or eVisa form. We will tell you how to do this when you finish using the app.


Privacy and security

The app is safe and secure. Your personal information will not be stored in the app or on the phone when you finish using it.

Ratings and reviews

Awful user experience, I kept having to re-authenticate and start over when I was doing the steps correctly (they worked after many tries). Glitched when trying to find the chip in my BRP and made me start from the beginning instead of letting me try again. Wouldn't accept my passport but didn't communicate that beforehand. Incredibly frustrating.

I think it is so short-sighted to rely on tech when we know it fails us very often. There is apparently no other system in place other than this awful app to sort out something so important. Also, I didn't know this, but you should UNINTALL the app if you have been locked out. A kind lady working at immigration told me over the phone. Another fact that would have been useful to know: you should OPEN your passport to the first page to scan the NFC. Don't follow the misleading picture. GL

The App is difficult to follow. It does not save all information you provided and get different codes for each section and not saving. Meaning submitted 90% of required information if you come out or get timed out because you have to go outside to add something else, you lose all and have to start over again. It's taken me more than an hour and get to where I take a photo. It didn't save and as I was directed to another page all disappeared. I rate the App 0 at the moment. Not fit for purpose
