Published in 1964, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tells the story of Charlie Bucket, a poor child who finds one of just a handful of golden tickets inside a chocolate bar. Each ticket grants its lucky finder a tour of genius confectioner Willy Wonka’s factory, plus a lifetime supply of chocolate – Charlie’s dreams come true.

Alongside the four other golden ticket recipients (all wealthy children accompanied by doting parents), Charlie follows Wonka through his wonder-filled factory. As they progress through the tour, each child must fight temptation and follow Wonka’s rules – a more difficult challenge than it seems.

A musical version of Roald Dahl’s original story, this vintage gem features iconic songs including Pure Imagination and The Candy Man. Accompanied by a chorus of green-haired Oompa-Loompas (the chocolate factory’s workers), Gene Wilder plays a quirky, whimsical Wonka intent on testing each child’s morality. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, and its magical world continues to delight viewers today.

Directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, this movie shines with its vivid visuals and spectacular special effects. Taking a similar tone to Roald Dahl’s book, Depp’s Wonka is more menacing, unpredictable, and eccentric, struggling to navigate a difficult relationship with his dentist father.
