About this audiobook

Not all wizards were born to be heroes.

Things not to do when you find out you’re a wizard:

#1 Do not destroy your apartment with magical fire. You WILL NOT get the security deposit back.

#2 Do not form an alliance with the guy who is trying to murder you. This will end badly.

#3 Do not drag the girl you’re desperately in love with into your wizard mess. You risk her watching you fail miserably.

#4 Under no circumstances should you get in the middle of an epic magical battle. Death will happen. Lots of death and bad things.

This Epic Tome contains all four books in The Tale of Bryant Adams:

How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin' Days

Seven Things Not to Do When Everyone's Trying to Kill You

Three Simple Steps to Wizarding Domination

Five Spellbinding Laws of International Larceny

Bryant is the epitome of an awkward teen but with a good head on his shoulders. Best friends with the coolest kid in school gives him some cred by association at least and his mom is everyone’s favorite drama teacher. Throw in the girl he has a major crush on and head over heels for and things really begin to happen. I got a kick out of this series. I thought it was funny. To me it maybe leans a little more towards YA even though the characters are in high school but I didn’t mind. It gave me some major Percy Jackson vibes with a hint of Harry Potter with the whole “you’re a wizard!” and discovering magic is indeed real. I’ve been pulled into Bryant’s world and I was anxious to see what’s in store for him and his friends as they navigate the world of magic. I loved the idea of a cellphone that has any and all magical information stored on it with apps included. I mean, we are in the 21st century after all. The story moves at a steady pace from beginning to end and each book is better than the last. Definitely worth the read and highly recommended! Narrator does a phenomenal job of capturing the awkwardness of the main character along with the confidence and suaveness of the supporting characters.

I read this via audiobook:) So, I know Megan O'Russell's writing first through her Ena of Ilbrea series (ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC - one of my HIGHLY RECOMMENDED reads....for real), and then through her Guilds of Ilbrea, Girl of Glass, and Heart of Smoke series. All of those have a darker vibe from the start - and they're all amazing. Now with all of that said, this was lighter and funnier - but it's not a comedy. It's contemporary fantasy with high school main characters and the protagonist has a great sense of humor. What happens in the books though, isn't always light and fluffy, but the tone is able to stay in that sarcastic space, which is really cool. The narrator was fantastic. His pacing was faster than a lot of audiobooks I've read, but it worked REALLY well for Bryant's personality. Bryant gets these moments of panic and they were done so well in their delivery. I won't have any other voice in my head for him...ever! The full series is out for audiobook (and other formats, of course), so you can binge the whole tale!

A nice, if somewhat geeky and accident-prone kid gets sucked into a crazy adventure when he tries to do the right thing. He stumbles into one disaster after another, and somehow, with a little help from his friends as well as some from unexpected places, manages to help save the world - or at least New York. A bit kooky at times, this book takes the outlandishly ridiculous and manages to make it not just believable, but also heartfelt. It is the kind of book that throws all the tropes on their head. It's a coming of age story with involved, intelligent parents. A chosen one story, where the chose one isn't the hero. A hidden world urban fantasy where the magic regularly (and messily) spills out into the mundane world. A teenage romance that is more about partnership than passion. A goofy YA fantasy that gets gritty and dark, and sometimes hits uncomfortable truths. If you are looking for a fast-moving, action filled, light-hearted, funny read with a deep and complex plot and some serious darkness of far reaching consequence that builds through the series and will hit you square in the feels, this is it. The audio version is narrated by Jacob McNatt who did an excellent job with it. His voice perfectly capture what I envisioned of the characters. Highly recommend listening to it if you enjoy audio books.
