«حيٌّ ينعم بكل شيء إلا الفرحة. لم أرَ أحداً يبتسم أو يتبادل التحية، الكل يدسّ عيونه في الأرض ولا يرفعها إلا لمماً. ترتفع الأيدي في تلويحة مبتورة وتعود إلى مكانها بسرعة متناهية، ارتفاعها يشي أنها تحية وفي حقيقة الأمر هي ساتر لحجب العين من الابتعاد عن الطريق المرسوم لها. أقطن هذا البيت منذ عشرين عاماً، تزيد قليلاً، لم يبادلني فيها أحد الزيارة ولم أجالس أحداً لمعرفة أخباره، وخلال هذه السنوات نبتت في داخلي العزلة ولم أعد حريصاً على معرفة ما يدور في الجوار وأيقنت أن واحدنا يعيش كخلية واحدة غير قابلة للانقسام أو كقبور متجاورة كل شخص في قبره.»
