أول ما يجد الباحث في كتب الشرق عن المبادئ الاقتصادية هو اهتمامهم بالوجهة الأدبية من الاقتصاد، أو بعبارة أخرى اهتمامهم بالوجهة الاقتصادية من علم الأخلاق، كذم الشراهة والتحذير من حب المال ، والأمانة في المعاملات، وبالعدل في الكيل والوزن وإعطاء كل ذي حق حقه، ومراعاة العقود ، ومدح القناعة وذم التبذير ، والحث على الاعتدال والإحسان إلى الأجير والمحتاج. أما رأيهم عن تكوين الثروة فكان رأيًا دينيًّا؛ لأنهم قالوا بتعلق ذلك بإرادة الله، وإن كان يعول فيه على شيء من همة الأفراد ونشاطهم.
