दी प्रिंस (राजकुमार) फ्लोरेंटाइन के जनसेवक और राजनीतिक विचारक निकोलो मैकियावेली द्वारा लिखी एक राजनीतिक किताब है. इसे 1513 में लिखा गया था, लेकिन 1532, निकोलो मैकियावेली की मृत्यु के बाद पांच वर्षों तक प्रकाशित नहीं किया. यह किताब उस लोगों के लिए मार्गदर्शक का काम करती है जो सत्ता के करीब जाना जाते हैं या उसे पाना चहते हैं. यह व्याख्या करती है की सत्ता को पाकर राजकुमार बनने के लिए सरल स्वभाव की नहीं कभी-कभी कुटिलता और धूर्तता की भी जरूरत होती है. शायद इसी लिए धूर्तता के लिए मैकियावेलीयन एक पर्यायवाची शब्द के रूप में पश्चिमी साहित्य में प्रयोग किया जाता है. एक मनन करने योग्य पुस्तक जो बताती है की राजकुमार बनने के लिए सरल स्वभाव की नहीं एक साहसी व कुटिल स्वभाव की भी जरूरत होती है. और सौभाग्य हमेशा उसी के साथ होता है जो एक कदम आगे बढ़कर किसी चीज को पाने के लिए सभी तरह के प्रयास करता है.
निकोलो मैकियावेली का जन्म फ्लोरेंस में 3 मई 1469 को हुआ था. सन 1494 से लेकर 1512 तक उन्होंने फ्लोरेंस में भिन्न पदों पर काम किया. सन् 1512 में फ्लोरेन्स में कैद कर लिए गए; बाद में निर्वासित कर दिए गए और सैन कैसैनो वापस लौटे. फ्लोरेन्स में 22 जून 1527 में मृत्यु हुई.
