凡事分已定，窮通自有時，不獨常人而然也。即出類拔萃之人，亦命難與時爭。歷觀千古之將相，其于未幸時，抵捱多少睏乏，靡所依棲。莫不自勞苦一番，磨勘多秋。然後做出一場掀天揭地事業，轟轟烈烈驚人之舉。大抵天將降其大任於斯人，靡不因磨練如斯，后能發奮于有為之大志耳。但此書開卷，單言漢代一事。
溯自高祖劉邦，亡秦滅楚之後，赤手混成一統土宇，創開四百餘年基業。上十五代相傳，一自高祖賓天，再傳惠帝，及文帝、景帝、武帝，一連五傳繼御，還撇開呂后亂政不題。自高祖王帝以來，頗稱一治，四海晏然，邊疆安完。諸事不多再贅。
惟此書上不言高王建業，下不敘光武中興，單表西漢武帝年間，有一奇緣故事，名曰《三合明珠寶劍》。當時有左班丞相，姓屈名忠成，乃系河南省人氏。由賜進士出身，居然官居首相之尊，二坎不端，乃奸佞之輩。而又有一位姓司馬名相如，乃山西人氏，由舉孝廉出身，官拜右班丞相之職，為人剛直，勤勞國政。且說時逢五月，節屆端陽，吊屈原之溺水，自古皆然，各處多放龍舟，亦仿古慶事。
