《東國輿地勝覽》：「國在東方，先受朝日之光輝，故名朝鮮。」1392年，李成桂建立李氏王朝。朝日鮮明，晨曦清亮之國，朝鮮王朝由此誕生。
朝鮮繪畫由王權的意志層層漣漪，宮中畫師繪下一幅幅國王御真、宮中行事圖以及宣揚儒家教化的歷史規諫畫，更有吉慶畫如瑤池宴，各方神仙趕赴崑崙山，或破浪渡海，或駕乘祥雲，華美中精細入微。為求生計，宮中畫師之筆亦漫入民間，鮮活生動的風俗畫描寫人生百千事，呈現升斗小民的日常百景，也描繪新富階層娛樂的萬種風情。最不能忘懷，還是山水。朝鮮初期，從源於中國「瀟湘八景」的理想山水逐漸發展出屬於本地的八景；17世紀，隨著旅遊興起以及氏族委託繪製地產圖像，畫家足跡遍及真實山川，真景山水與莊園畫蔚為時尚……
