本書結合國內外廣泛使用的農戶可持續生計分析框架，依託微觀發展經濟學、農村扶貧與發展等相關理論，從西部農戶微觀個體行為的角度來探索我國農村可持續發展的途徑，提出和論證我國西部貧困山區農戶生計與自然生態環境保護關係的整體分析框架，並進一步利用西安交通大學農戶生計與環境課題組2008年在西安周至縣南部山區四個鄉鎮的一手調查資料，深入系統地研究西部貧困山區農戶生計的現狀、農戶在農業、林業、兼業經營之間等進行生計選擇的過程、貧困與貧困脆弱性的特徵與影響因素，社會性別因素與農村人口遷移對農戶可持續生計的影響，以及退耕還林工程、天然林保護工程、建立自然保護區等自然生態保護政策對農戶生計活動和生計後果的影響等。在理論與實證研究的基礎上，本書也將提出促進和實現西部貧困山區農戶可持續生計的公共政策與社區發展建議等。
