本書是張文木繼《中國地緣政治論》和《印度與印度洋》之後的又一本新書。天下所有能成為「問題」的宗教多不關乎學理而是關乎政治。黑格爾說「國家不是藝術品」，這就是說，國家並不是用來欣賞和把玩的思辨理趣，而是被用來保障人民生死存亡的公器。如果不涉及國家權力，僅作為文化權利存在的宗教在任何國家都不會成為「問題」。歷史經驗表明，宗教問鼎國家權力或試圖在國家之外另立政治中心，其政治後果都會危及國家的長治久安和人民的福祉；嚴重的話，還會造成國家和地區長時段的大分裂和大動亂。漢代哲學家董仲舒說：「患，人之中不一者也。」用通俗些的話表述就是：一個中心曰「忠」，兩個中心曰「患」。這個思想貫穿《基督教佛教興起對歐亞地區競爭力的影響》，是理解全書主題的紅線。
