1968年10月14日，メキシコ・オリンピック100m走で米国のジム・ハインズが優勝したときの電動計時の記録は9秒95でした。この記録は，メキシコシティという標高2000m以上ある空気の薄い高地でつくられたものでしたが，電動計時では人類で初めて10秒を切るものでした。これ以後も，100m走の世界記録は何回か更新され，そして，2009年8月16日，ベルリンで開催された世界陸上選手権大会決勝でウサイン・ボルトは9秒58という驚異的な記録を出し世界中を驚かせました。
