本書誕生自阿鐵的博士論文，研究錨定於東亞地區的四個紀錄片電影節：
一、日本的山形國際紀錄片影展──亞洲首個紀錄片電影節
二、北京的中國紀錄片交流周──中國獨立紀錄片最前沿
三、台灣的台灣國際紀錄片影展──結合博物館學的電影節
四、香港的華語紀錄片節──向全球華語地區開放的紀錄片競賽場地
與一般大型電影節不同，商業洽談、放映權買賣並非這些紀錄片電影節的主線任務。它們藉共同協作、建立聚腳蒲點、開設工作坊與研討會、集中活動地點等，邀請更多團體加入電影節社群，搭建促成交流、聯絡、共享的基建。所有努力都朝向同一目標──立足本土，放眼世界，致力推動地區紀錄片製作及培育電影製作人。
