本書透過蔣介石一生的軍政經歷，呈現他對日本的敵我意識變化。首先，論述蔣人格形成過程中日本所扮演角色。對蔣而言，早年的東瀛留學之旅，不僅是其接受現代科技文明洗禮的起點，更是結識孫中山及加入革命陣營的關鍵。其次，探討北伐期間日本政府的三次出兵山 東，對蔣所造成之衝擊。面對日本之不願中國統一，雙方已無合作空間。但耐人尋味的是，滿洲國成立後，蔣介石以「安內攘外」政策應對之。其目的有三：一為消滅反側，二為消滅地方勢力，三為迴避對日作戰。尤值注意者，蔣利用日本的恐共心理，爭取日本政府對剿共政策的支持，則是塘沽協定後，華北得以暫無戰事的緣由所在。及至蘆溝橋事變爆發，蔣介石與蘇聯簽訂「中蘇互不侵犯條約」，爭取大量軍事援助，並掌握日本防蘇心理，預測日本在中國戰場的調度戰力，奠定中國的長期抗戰基礎。最後，蔣在抗日戰爭結束時制訂「以德報怨」政策，對保存日本領土完整及維繫天皇制度，有最直接的貢獻。這一舉動，除為戰後日本復興奠下良基以外，也影響了1950年代東亞國際政治的發展
