唐中後期眾多詩歌表達作者和社會其他各種人物對貧困、卑賤生活的慨歎。本書把類型、模式研究應用於對這些詩歌的研究，總結其內容、形式的規律，深刻指出它們在中國詩史中的重要意義。
長久以來，學者把反映百姓貧賤生活，以及反映詩人自身貧賤生活的詩歌分開研究，對這兩種詩歌的整體評價也有明顯不同。本書考察兩種詩歌共有的内容和形式特點，打破兩種詩歌研究之間的界限。
