랜돌프 칼데콧(1846~1886)
1846년 영국 체스터에서 출생한 영국의 대표적인 그림책 작가이다. 케이트 그린어웨이, 월터 크레인과 함께 영국 3대 그림책 작가로 손꼽히며 근대 그림책의 아버지라 불린다. 15살에 은행에 취직하여 회사를 다니면서 꾸준하게 그림 공부를 하다가 1872년부터 본격적으로 그림책 작가로 전업하여 총 16권의 그림책을 출판하였다.
영국 산업혁명기 시절 출판시장이 부흥되는 사회적 분위기와 맞물리면서 그의 책은 베스트셀러에 올랐으며, 이후 유명 작가의 반열에 오르게 되었다. 19세기 그림책 삽화에 있어 절대적인 영향력을 끼친 인물로 평가된다.
