About the author
저자 브렛 하트(Francis Brett Harte)는 미국의 시인이자 소설가로 광부, 교사 등 여러 직업을 전전하다 미국 조폐국에서 일하기도 했다. 1868년 《오버랜드 먼슬리》지의 창간에 참여하면서 단편 소설과 시를 발표하기 시작했다. 단편 소설 「로링 캠프의 행운」을 비롯해, 서부의 지방색이 드러난 작품 특히 캘리포니아 골드러시를 소재로 한 작품으로 작가로서 명성과 부를 얻었다. 하트와 교우하면서 돈독한 우정을 나누었던 마크 트웨인은 사이가 틀어진 후 그를 사기꾼이라고 힐난하기도 했다. 반면에 앤드루 카네기와 러디어드 키플링 등은 하트를 높게 평가했다. 하트는 영사로 임명되어 독일로 이주했다가, 이후 영국에 정착했다. 1902년 영국 캠벌리에서 인후암으로 사망했다. 단편집 『로링 캠프의 행운과 또 다른 소묘들』, 동명의 영화 원작인 『샌디 바의 두 남자』 등을 비롯해 많은 패러디 작품을 남겼다.
