사마천은 스무 살이 될 무렵 일상적인 삶에서 벗어나 천하를 주유(周遊)했다. 장안을 떠나 낙양(洛陽)으로 가서 회수(淮水)와 양자강(揚子江) 유역을 돌아 회계산(會稽山)에 올랐으며, 구의산(九疑山)을 둘러보고 원수(沅水)와 상수(湘水)를 건넜으며, 다시 북상해 민수(汶水)와 사수(泗水)를 지나 제(齊)나라와 공자가 태어난 노(魯)나라의 수도 곡부(曲阜)를 거쳐 천하 명산 태산(泰山)에 오르고, 역산(繹山)에도 올랐으며, 파(鄱)·설(薛)·팽성(彭城)을 들르고 양(梁)·초(楚)를 거쳐서 장안으로 돌아온 후 낭중(郎中) 벼슬에 오른다.
