문헌상으로서는 가장 오래된 것 연극은 어떤 형태이었는가? 연극은 우리나라 연극 특색의 하나인 무용(舞踊)을 많이 포함한 것이었다. 어느 나라에서든지 그러한 고대극에 가장 많은 형식인 가면극(假面劇)을 비롯하여 여러 가지 종류가 등장한다. 이 책은 희곡의 원시적 문화에서 지금까지 전해오는 놀음놀이인 연극 예술에 관해 변천 과정을 간략히 서술한 책이다. 민속학자인 송석하는 이른바 우리나라 민속에 관한 실증적 토대로 접근을 시도하였고 여러 편의 저서를 발간하였다. 현재까지 전국적으로 전해오고 분포돼있는 우리 전통 민속놀이 중 일부 유형문화재의 가치를 소개한 것은 중요한 시도라고 할 수 있겠다.
