한국의 연극(演劇)은 이미 신라시대(新羅時代)부터 상당(相當)히 발달(發達)되었던 것이다. 이는 《삼국사기(三國史記)》나 《삼국유사(三國遺事)》 등에 보이나 이들은 문헌(文獻)으로서 최고(最古)이지만 그 형태상으로 보면 그 이전에 상당(相當)한 역사(歷史)를 가진 것으로 보인다. 당시의 극(劇)은 한국극(韓國劇)의 특색의 하나인 무용(舞踊)을 많이 포함(包含)하였다. 어느 나라에 있어서도 그 고대극(古代劇)에 가장 흔한 형식(形式)인 가면극(假面劇)이며 금환(金丸), 월전(月顚), 대면(大面), 동독(東毒), 산예(?猊)* 등이 이것이다.총론 중에서
