「어린 벗에게」는 일방적 발신형태의 서신 네 편으로 구성된 비교적 단순한 구조의 소설입니다. 여기에서 수신자로 지칭된 ‘어린 벗’이란 특정한 청자라기보다는 발표지인 『청춘』의 독자일반으로 생각됩니다. 말하자면 작가가 독자에게 자신의 이야기를 직접 건네는 방식이죠. 소설의 화자는 임보형이라는 청년입니다.
About the author
이광수(李光洙, 1892~1950) 호는 고주, 외배, 올보리, 춘원, 장백산인. 아명은 보경. 창씨명은 키야마 미쓰로오(香山光郞).
1892년 2월 1일 평안북도 정주에서 이종원(李鍾元)의 장남으로 출생했다.
1902년 부모를 여의고 고향을 떠나 한때 동학에 가담하기도 하였다.
일진회의 추천으로 일본에 유학하여 동경 다이죠(大成)중학교를 거쳐 1910년 메이지학원(明治學院) 중학부를 졸업했다.
