It is generally held to be the most famous of a number of narratives written by former slaves during the same period. William Wells Brown (c. 1814 – November 6, 1884) was a prominent African-American abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian in the United States. Born into slavery in Montgomery County, Kentucky, near the town of Mount Sterling, Brown escaped to Ohio in 1834 at the age of 20. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked for abolitionist causes and became a prolific writer. This is one of many books in the series 3 Books To Know. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 July 1, 1896) was an American abolitionist and author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions for enslaved African Americans. Frederick Douglass (February 1818 February 20, 1895[5]) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. William Wells Brown (c. 1814 November 6, 1884) was a prominent African-American abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian in the United States.
