沖縄戦が事実上終結した1945年6月、米軍は捕虜になったばかりの「生身（なまみ）の捕虜(fresh POWs)」に対し、意識調査を行った。兵士らは、戦塵を振り払う間もなく、生死すら覚束ない状況下で戦場の話題や恥意識、戦後の日本のあり方等について答えている。戦場記憶を放出するほんの一瞬、自身の戦争を、戦場を語ったのである。ある意味で本調査は、回復困難な時代の精神が記録として残され、日本軍精神を今に伝える貴重な戦争遺産だと考えられる。
これとともに、「沖縄日本兵に対する聴き取り調査」の結果も明らかにした。米軍は、日本軍心理を確かめるため比較的高学歴な兵士から聴き取り調査を行った。熾烈な戦場から生還できた兵士らは、自由に戦争観や天皇制等について意見を述べている。兵士らの答えは、軍人精神を表すとともに、国民一般の戦争観を表したものだろう。
なお、本書は「沖縄戦捕虜の証言」（2015年、紫峰出版）と対をなすものである。捕虜尋問証言や意識調査に寄り添い、兵士の叫びやつぶやきが感じられるだろう。
