戦時下の沖縄近海は、米潜水艦攻撃により、定期船、徴用船、疎開船等多数が海没した魔の海域であった。遭難船舶について日本軍は、厳格な箝口令を敷き、誰も遭難船や人の死について語れなかった。その上さらに海の戦争は、生存者の少なさや証言自体の困難さもあり未だ深い海の底に閉じこめられたままだ。
沖縄戦の深層や姿・形を追い続ける著者は、今回新たに海に眠る戦没者に思いを致し、海の鎮魂書を世に届けるものである。
題名のモルフェ－は、ギリシア神話に題材をとったもので、海に沈み、今もなお眠りについている人々の姿をたとえたものである。本書を通してもう一つの沖縄戦の実相、海の戦争がいかに残酷きわまりないものであったか理解できるであろう。
