आलफ्रेड रसेल वॅलेस यांचे चरित्र अनेक अद्भुतरम्य घटनांनी भरले आहे. एक विचारवंत म्हणूनही ते गाजले. गेल्या शतकातल्या अनेक इंग्रज शास्त्रज्ञांपेक्षा त्यांचे वागणे वेगळे ठरते, ते त्यांच्या सामाजिक जाणिवेमुळे. डार्विनबरोबर वॅलेस यांचे नाव उत्क्रांतिवादाशी निगडित झाले होते, पण त्याबरोबर त्यांनी इतरही अनेक क्षेत्रांत काम केलं. खरं तर;  पहिला पर्यावरण शास्त्रज्ञ म्हणूनही त्यांचा गौरव व्हायला हरकत नाही. मराठीत काही स्फुट लेख सोडले, तर वॅलेस यांच्या इतर कार्याची माहिती देणारे चरित्र मराठीत नाही; या छोटेखानी चरित्रामुळे ती उणीव अशंत: तरी भरून निघावी.
