This book is a beginner's guide to AutomationML Edition 2, written for students, engineers, lecturers, developers and those interested. Machine readable engineering data makes the data accessible and interpretable by software, enabling a plethora of opportunities. This book carefully introduces AutomationML, its goals, values and innovations. It teaches the architecture of AutomationML and explains the language elements with a multitude of examples and step-by-step instructions.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Drath is a scientist in the field of Automation Engineering, one of the architects of CAEX and AutomationML, board member of the AutomationML Association. He studied automation engineering at TU Ilmenau from 1990-1995 and received his PhD from 1996-1999. From 2001-2017 he worked at ABB's research center in Ladenburg as a scientist, group leader, program manager and senior principal scientist. In 2017, Rainer Drath was appointed Professor of Mechatronic Systems Development at Pforzheim University. There he teaches, among other things, Mechatronic Systems Engineering and, together with his team, is dedicated to researching innovative methods for improving interdisciplinary systems engineering as well as Industry 4.0. Rainer Drath is the editor of the first AutomationML book and author of more than 200 publications.
