A solutions manual to accompany Statistics andProbability with Applications for Engineersand Scientists

Unique among books of this kind, Statistics and Probabilitywith Applications for Engineers and Scientists coversdescriptive statistics first, then goes on to discuss thefundamentals of probability theory. Along with case studies, examples, and real-world data sets, the book incorporates clearinstructions on how to use the statistical packages Minitab®and Microsoft® Office Excel® to analyze various datasets. The book also features:
  • Detailed discussions on sampling distributions, statisticalestimation of population parameters, hypothesis testing, reliability theory, statistical quality control including Phase Iand Phase II control charts, and process capability indices
  • A clear presentation of nonparametric methods and simple andmultiple linear regression methods, as well as a brief discussionon logistic regression method
  • Comprehensive guidance on the design of experiments, includingrandomized block designs, one- and two-way layout designs, Latinsquare designs, random effects and mixed effects models, factorialand fractional factorial designs, and response surfacemethodology
  • A companion website containing data sets for Minitab andMicrosoft Office Excel, as well as JMP ® routines andresults

Assuming no background in probability andstatistics, Statistics and Probability with Applicationsfor Engineers and Scientists features a unique, yettried-and-true, approach that is ideal for all undergraduatestudents as well as statistical practitioners who analyze andillustrate real-world data in engineering and the naturalsciences.

The quality inspector is the person perhaps most closely involved with day-to-day activities intended to ensure that products and services meet customer expectations. The quality inspector is required to understand and apply a variety of tools and techniques as codified in the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) Body of Knowledge (BoK). The tools and techniques identified in the ASQ CQI BoK include technical math, metrology, inspection and test techniques, and quality assurance. Quality inspectors frequently work with the quality function of organizations in the various measurement and inspection laboratories, as well as on the shop floor supporting and interacting with quality engineers and production/service delivery personnel.

This handbook supports individuals preparing to perform, or those already performing, this type of work. It is intended to serve as a ready reference for quality inspectors and quality inspectors in training, as well as a comprehensive reference for those individuals preparing to take the ASQ CQI examination. Examples and problems used throughout the handbook are thoroughly explained, are algebra-based, and are drawn from real-world situations encountered in the quality profession.

To assist readers in using this book as a ready reference or as a study aid, the book has been organized so as to conform explicitly to the ASQ CQI BoK. Each chapter title, all major topical divisions within the chapters, and every main point has been titled and then numbered exactly as they appear in the CQI BoK.

In this “informative and delightful” (American Scientist) biography, Margaret Cheney explores the brilliant and prescient mind of Nikola Tesla, one of the twentieth century’s greatest scientists and inventors.

In Tesla: Man Out of Time, Margaret Cheney explores the brilliant and prescient mind of one of the twentieth century's greatest scientists and inventors. Called a madman by his enemies, a genius by others, and an enigma by nearly everyone, Nikola Tesla was, without a doubt, a trailblazing inventor who created astonishing, sometimes world-transforming devices that were virtually without theoretical precedent. Tesla not only discovered the rotating magnetic field -- the basis of most alternating-current machinery -- but also introduced us to the fundamentals of robotics, computers, and missile science. Almost supernaturally gifted, unfailingly flamboyant and neurotic, Tesla was troubled by an array of compulsions and phobias and was fond of extravagant, visionary experimentations. He was also a popular man-about-town, admired by men as diverse as Mark Twain and George Westinghouse, and adored by scores of society beauties.
From Tesla's childhood in Yugoslavia to his death in New York in the 1940s, Cheney paints a compelling human portrait and chronicles a lifetime of discoveries that radically altered -- and continue to alter -- the world in which we live. Tesla: Man Out of Time is an in-depth look at the seminal accomplishments of a scientific wizard and a thoughtful examination of the obsessions and eccentricities of the man behind the science.
