Acerca del autor

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was born to a religious Quaker Family in Yarmouth, England but spent her childhood in London and its suburbs. She lived most of her life within her parents home, being influenced by her mother MaryÕs religious and educational convictions. AnnaÕs mother instilled in her a particular affinity for animals. At age 51 Anna contracted a mysterious illness that left her in chronic ill health and at age 56 she began to write a book about horses that became Black Beauty. The story was published just before her death and anti-cruelty groups gave it positive notices resulting in good sales. AnnaÕs novel had significant impact in at least two areas: the humane treatment of animals and the future direction of childrenÕs literature. In 1923 the publisher claimed the novel was the number six best seller in the world. Anna died of her illness in 1878.
