The economic status of young people has declined significantly over the past two decades, despite a variety of programs designed to aid new workers in the transition from the classroom to the job market. David G. Branchflower is professor in and chair of the Department of Economics at Dartmouth College and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Freeman holds the Herbert Ascherman Chair in Economics at Harvard University and is director of the NBER Labor Studies Program and codirector of the Center for Economic Performance of the London School of Economics. He is editor or coeditor of eight previous NBER volumes published by the University of Chicago Press.
