Esther Vilar ist Argentinierin deutscher Herkunft. Sie studierte Medizin und Soziologie und arbeitete unter anderem als Aerztin. Mit vielen ihrer Bücher und Theaterstücke hat sie Aufsehen erregt. Heute lebt sie hauptsächlich in London.
