As the author of this purposefully structured up-to-date text, I wanted to mention that I graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology over 54 years ago. I had a very rewarding career in machinery reliability improvement, although I've only had two employers (J&J and Exxon) since 1962. My 20th (and no doubt last) book relates to every one of the many job functions found in modern process plants. The text qualifies as the culmination of my work in industry. It consolidates findings which have been alluded to in a variety of releases but, for all kinds of reasons, were never described elsewhere in the best-detailed, updated, or most relevant manner. As of 2016, every one of the book's hundreds of failure avoidance topics and examples has been successfully implemented by acknowledged Best-of-Class (BoC) companies. Consider this a plea to incorporate these BoCs' successes in your company's improvement strategies. Heinz P Bloch is the owner and principal of Process Machinery Consulting Co, and has been the reliability editor of Hydrocarbon Processing Magazine since 1990. He is the author or co-author of over 650 technical papers or articles, and 19 full text books. He was a founding member of Texas A&M University’s International Pump Users Symposium.
