I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review. After a harrowing ordeal being abducted and enslaved by pirates, Kit Frazier has returned to London after a 7-year absence to find that not only did his own brother and his wife betray him and refuse to pay for his ransom and give him up for dead, but also his beloved fiancee, about whom he has dreamed for years, has married his cousin. Not able to stay in the home of his betrayer and with only pirate booty and no real money, Kit finds he and his traumatized charge, Alex have no place to go. Madeleine Wilson, peniless daughter of a deceased doctor, offers Kit and Alex lodging at her uncle's home even though her own welcome there is tenuous at best. Even though Maddy is almost always overshadowed by her cousin, the incredibly beautiful and incredibly spoiled Lady Rose, the attraction between Kit and his "Angel" Maddy is immediate and undeniable. Although stuggling with his own demons and reduced circumstances, Kit is dumstruck by Maddy's plight when he arrives at her uncle's house. Although an invited guest and companion to his daughter, the earl treats Maddy more like a servant, forcing Maddy to wear Rose's ill-fitting cast-off gowns and working as housekeeper and household manager. Maddy supervises the household staff, keeps the accounts and even served as cook for a time. Kit even overhears the earl's ultimatum to Maddy that unless she finds a husband and moves out of his home, she must agree to become his mistress at the end of London's social seeason or he will put her out of the house. Kit is infuriated by this outrageous treatment of his Angel, but since he is not ready to take a wife, yet, he feels there is little he can do. This story has lots of twists and turns that kept me interested from start to finish. What will happen when Kit meets his former fiancee and her family--the family that he felt should have been his--for the first time? Will Kit ever learn to control the rage and PTSD tearing him apart? What will become of Maddy? Will another man offer for her hand, or will she succumb to her uncle's disgusting demands to avoid having to live on the streets? Can she and Kit fight their growing attraction since he feels he cannot be a proper husband for her? And what of Lady Rose's ridiculous melodramatic dreams of becoming the bride of the "Pirate Prince" and being the talk of the ton? Once I got into the story, I found myself unable to put it down even though I hadn't read the first book in the series.
