The central role of the housing market in the recent recession raised a series of questions about similar episodes throughout economic history. Were the underlying causes of housing and mortgage crises the same in earlier episodes? Has the onset and spread of crises changed over time? Eugene N. White is professor of economics at Rutgers University and a research associate of the NBER. Kenneth Snowden is associate professor of economic history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a research associate of the NBER. Price Fishback is the Frank and Clara Kramer Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona and a research associate of the NBER. With Kenneth Snowden and Jonathan Rose, he is coauthor of Well-Worth Saving: How the New Deal Safeguarded Home Ownership, also published by the University of Chicago Press.
