Jack and Rochelle first met at a youth dance in Poland before the war. They shared one dance, and Jack stepped on Rochelle’s shoes. She was unimpressed. JACK AND ROCHELLE SUTIN met in the woods of Poland as Jewish resistance fighters during the Holocaust. They married in 1942 in the underground bunker that served as one of their shelters while they fought with Jewish partisan groups during the war. After that, the couple was sent to a displaced-persons camp in Germany. The two later immigrated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where they ran an import business and had two children. Rochelle Sutin died in 2010.
LAWRENCE SUTIN is a writer of fiction, biography, and memoir from Minnesota. He edited Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love and Resistance, the memoirs of his parents’ experience as underground resistance fighters during the Holocaust. He is a professor of creative writing in the low-residency master of fine arts program of the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
